Prognosis
Prognosis is generally good — DH tends to improve over time as tertiary dentin is deposited and tubules sclerose naturally.
Complete resolution with desensitizing toothpaste occurs in 4-8 weeks in the majority of mild-to-moderate cases.
Severe cases or those associated with ongoing tissue loss (erosion, progressive recession) require causative factor control and may need restorative intervention.
Without addressing the underlying cause (acid erosion, GERD, aggressive brushing), DH will recur and associated tooth structure loss will progress.
