Chronic Apical Periodontitis — Prevention

Silent periradicular destruction — granuloma and cyst formation at the root apex

Prevention

  • Adequate coronal seal after root canal treatment to prevent re-infection
  • Timely crown placement after root canal treatment (within 3 months)
  • Radiographic follow-up of all root canal treated teeth
  • Prompt retreatment or surgery for non-healing periapical lesions
  • Prevention of pulp necrosis (see dental caries and trauma prevention)
  • Quality root canal treatment: adequate working length, complete obturation, no ledging
