Chronic Periodontitis — Diagnosis

Progressive irreversible destruction of the tooth-supporting apparatus

Diagnosis

Full-mouth periodontal charting at 6 sites per tooth: probing depth, BOP, CAL, recession, furcation, mobility. Establishes disease severity map.

Radiographic assessment: periapical radiographs for alveolar bone level; bitewings for posterior interdental bone. CBCT for precise defect morphology before regenerative surgery.

Staging and Grading: Stage based on CAL, bone loss, tooth loss, complexity factors. Grade primary criterion: (% bone loss) / (patient age) — e.g. >1.0 = Grade C (rapid progression). Secondary: smoking, diabetes.
