Dental Erosion — Prognosis

Irreversible loss of dental hard tissue by chemical dissolution from non-bacterial acids

Prognosis

Prognosis is excellent if the causative factor is eliminated early. Once the acid source is removed, erosion stops.

Existing erosion defects cannot be reversed — unlike caries, eroded enamel cannot remineralize because the surface itself is absent, not just demineralized.

Without addressing the cause, erosion progresses relentlessly. In severe cases of untreated GERD or eating disorders, complete loss of the clinical crown is possible.

With comprehensive management (cause elimination + protective measures + appropriate restorations), most patients can maintain tooth structure for life.
