Periodontal Abscess — Prognosis

Acute purulent infection localised within the periodontal tissues

Prognosis

Tooth prognosis depends on: degree of pre-existing bone loss, mobility grade, furcation involvement, patient compliance. Teeth with severe pre-existing bone loss may require extraction despite abscess resolution.

Ludwig's Angina: bilateral submandibular-sublingual-submental infection causing floor-of-mouth oedema, tongue elevation, airway obstruction. Medical emergency: IV antibiotics (Amoxicillin/Clavulanate + Metronidazole), surgical drainage, possible tracheotomy. Mortality 5–10% untreated.
