Acute Apical Periodontitis — Prevention

Acute inflammation of the periradicular tissues — from hyperemia to suppuration at the root apex

Prevention

  • Timely root canal treatment of teeth with irreversible pulpitis before necrosis develops
  • Proper working length determination to avoid apical extrusion
  • Adequate coronal seal after root canal treatment to prevent reinfection
  • Regular radiographic follow-up of root canal treated teeth (1 year, then 2-year intervals)
  • Immediate management of acute dental trauma to prevent delayed necrosis
  • Patient education about signs of spreading dental infection requiring emergency care
  • Antibiotic prophylaxis considerations for immunocompromised patients
