Classification

BEWE Score 0 — No erosion

Normal tooth surfaces.

  • No clinical signs of erosion
  • Normal enamel luster and anatomy

BEWE Score 1 — Initial

Early surface changes.

  • Surface texture change — loss of surface luster
  • Fine surface detail lost
  • No loss of hard tissue volume
  • Cupping not visible

BEWE Score 2 — Moderate

Distinct erosion defects with <50% of surface involved.

  • Hard tissue loss evident
  • Cupping on posterior teeth
  • Rounding of enamel edges
  • Dentine may be involved
  • <50% surface affected

BEWE Score 3 — Severe

Hard tissue loss affecting ≥50% of surface.

  • ≥50% surface severely affected
  • Dentine clearly exposed
  • Significant pulp risk on anterior teeth
  • Gross structural changes
