See the shock case before your group does

For paediatrics teachers and simulation-centre heads planning an emergencies module: the page shows how Pediatric Assistant combines a branching case, a procedure and tests, so a seminar can be designed before a demo.

The screenshots on the Pediatric Assistant page were captured in the running application and show one student's route through the Pediatric Emergencies programme. Each now sits next to the feature it shows, with a caption, and opens at original size: zoom in, drag, and move to the next screen with the arrow keys or a swipe.

The protocol is visible at the point of choice

The case «Child in shock» opens with the history at step 1 of 5: a three-year-old boy brought in after three days of diarrhoea and vomiting, with his complaints and the current stage beside the text. Then the student orders investigations from a list that includes electrolytes, blood culture, blood gases, bedside glucose, a blood count and an ECG. At «Choosing tactics» there are five starting options, and the line above them names the source: the Kazakhstan Ministry of Health clinical protocol «Sepsis in children».

A decision changes how the case unfolds and cannot be undone. The final review shows the optimal path, and the case can be replayed towards a different outcome.

Feedback before the final comparison

The procedure «Anaphylactic shock algorithm» has ten stages. At stage five the student marks vascular access on a child figure and fills an infusion table whose values are calculated for 22 kg; after the choice, the application gives an explanation for the selected solution. Every error in a procedure is explained, and the result is compared with the reference algorithm. The emergencies section presents neonatal resuscitation, CPR for each age group, anaphylactic shock and DKA as step-by-step algorithms, with epinephrine doses and infusion volumes calculated by body weight.

A seminar built on different decisions

  • Before class: students play «Child in shock» on their own. In class, the group compares the investigations each of them ordered with the optimal path from the final review.

  • In class: put the tactics screen beside the source named above the options and ask students which points they would check against the edition of the protocol the department teaches by.

  • After class: the tests use single choice, ordering and matching, with an explanation after every wrong answer. Progress is recorded by module, course and programme in the personal dashboard.

A classroom can continue after activation

Pediatric Assistant runs on computers and on touch-screen devices. The internet is needed once, to activate the licence; cases and tests are then installed locally, so a classroom with unreliable Wi-Fi is not an obstacle. Interface and content are in Russian, Kazakh and English, and the language can be switched during work. The page lists 41 Pediatric Assistant cases held in the Library.

The page names the protocol behind the tactics question but not its edition, so a department teaching to a different edition should check the options against its own before the session.
