Superficial — marginal gingiva only
- • No pre-existing periodontitis
- • Often due to foreign body
- • No attachment loss
- • Localised fluctuant swelling at gingival margin
Periodontal Abscess (true)
Within an existing periodontal pocket
- • Pre-existing periodontitis present
- • Pus drains through pocket or sinus tract
- • Possible acute-on-chronic bone loss
- • Tooth may have increased mobility
Pericoronal Abscess
Around a partially erupted tooth
- • Most common around lower third molar
- • Pericoronal flap involvement
- • Distinct from classic periodontal abscess
